Fluid type

Also called: fluid typography, responsive font size, clamp() font size, scaling text.

Text whose size grows and shrinks smoothly with the screen width, between a smallest and a biggest size. It replaces fixed sizes that jump at breakpoints.

Make the little screen narrower. The fluid headline shrinks smoothly (never below 16px); the fixed one stays 28px and breaks into more lines. With a mouse you can also drag the screen's corner.

Wide

Say it in a prompt

Make the headings fluid type: font-size: clamp(32px, 5vw + 1rem, 64px) for h1 and clamp(24px, 3vw + 1rem, 40px) for h2, so they scale smoothly between phone and desktop instead of jumping at breakpoints.

Seen on

  • Vercel: Some font sizes grow and shrink smoothly with the screen, between a minimum and a maximum (clamp(24px, ..., 64px)).

You might describe it as

  • text size that changes with the screen width
  • headline gets smaller on a phone by itself
  • font that scales when I resize the window
