Deploy and run
How code is packaged, started and scaled.
Words
All learned. See them in History.
-
Autoscaling
A rule that adds and removes copies of your app for you, based on a number you watch, such as CPU or the lag of a queue.
-
Canary deploy
Releasing a new version to a small share of real traffic first, for example 10%, while the old version serves the rest.
-
Cold start
The extra wait when a serverless platform has no ready copy of your function and must start a new one first: set up the environment, load the language runtime and run your start-up code.
-
Container image
A package with everything your app needs to run: a base system with the language runtime, your app files and the command that starts it.
-
Health check
A small request the platform sends to each copy of your app every few seconds to ask "are you alive?" and "can you take traffic?".
-
Horizontal scaling
Handling more load by running more copies of the app, with a load balancer spreading requests across them.
-
Serverless function
A small piece of code you upload, and the cloud platform runs it each time an event comes in, such as a file upload or an HTTP request.
-
Sidecar
A second container that runs in the same pod as your app and helps it, for example by shipping logs or traces, or by acting as a proxy.
